Château Margaux

(Robert Parker's rating: 95 points)

(James Suckling's rating: 97 points)
Cabernet Sauvignon

Château Margaux is the undisputed symbol of its appellation, ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 classification.  With origins in the 12th century and shaped into its modern identity in the 16th, it is today under the stewardship of Corinne Mentzelopoulos.

Beyond this status, Château Margaux is celebrated as the ‘Queen of Bordeaux’, admired not only for its wines but also for its timeless architecture and cultural resonance.

Today, the estate covers 82 hectares of gravelly clay-limestone soils, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The vines average around 40 years of age, and harvesting is still carried out by hand, preserving tradition and precision.

Renowned for finesse, aromatic richness and longevity, Château Margaux offers generosity in youth and profound complexity with age, standing as one of Bordeaux’s greatest wines.

In the 2014 vintage, only about 36% of the harvest — the finest grapes — were selected for the Grand Vin, reflecting Château Margaux’s unwavering commitment to quality.

Tasting Notes:
(Robert Parker's rating: 95 points)
Affording the glass five to ten minutes to open, the aromatics are very similar to those expressed out of barrel, those dark cherries and violets, tightly wound at first but unfurling beautifully and seemingly with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and it appears to have fomented a little more finesse during its élevage. There is wonderful mineral tension and dash of spiciness on the persistent finish. There remains some tightness here, the implication that this is a Château Margaux determined to give long-term pleasure. Therefore, do not be afraid to give it a decade in the cellar.

(James Suckling's rating: 97 points)
The purity of cabernet sauvignon fruit is what impresses here. Subtle and energetic plum and currant aromas follow through to a gorgeously harmonized palate of wonderful fruit and an ultra-long finish. Current bush and light earth adds to the complexity. Lasts for minutes.
