Château Léoville Barton 2014 (RP:94, JS: 94)

(Robert Parker's rating: 94 points)

(James Suckling's rating: 92 points)

Château Léoville Barton is a Second Growth estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. Purchased by the Barton family in 1826, it remains one of the rare classified growths still under the stewardship of the same family today.

Interestingly, the estate has no château building of its own; all wines are vinified at its sister property, Château Langoa Barton. The family has devoted its energy and resources to the vineyard’s terroir. Covering about 47 hectares in the heart of Saint-Julien, the soils consist of deep gravel over clay. This exceptional terroir gives the wines remarkable strength, rivaling its more expensive neighbor Léoville Las Cases, and earning Léoville Barton a reputation as one of the most consistent “Super Seconds” with outstanding value.

Tasting Notes:
(Robert Parker's rating: 94 points)
The 2014 Leoville Barton is one of the must-buys of the vintage. Now in bottle, it has a very pure bouquet that gains intensity in the glass, laden with blackberry and raspberry coulis scents, cold wet stone, a wonderful mineralité that becomes more conspicuous with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin, a fine line of acidity that lends this precision and nervosité. There is class and sophistication in situ, not a powerful Léoville Barton, but beautifully poised. This is just a brilliant forerunner to the 2015 and it should represent great value.

(James Suckling's rating: 94 points)
Very aromatic with cherries and blackberries. Hints of flowers. Full body, lightly chewy yet ultra-fine tannins and a fresh finish. Tangy and delicious.
