Carruades de Lafite, the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, takes its name from the historic plateau adjoining the estate. Rooted in deep clay-gravel soils between woods and marshes, this unique setting shapes its character. First produced in the 19th century, it reflects the same terroir as the Grand Vin while showing its own personality, often with a higher proportion of Merlot. Elegant yet approachable, Carruades carries the spirit of Lafite in a more accessible form, offering a promise of refinement and harmony year after year.

Alcoholic fermentation takes place in wooden, concrete and stainless-steel vats with gentle pumping-over for soft extraction, followed by about 20 days of maceration. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for roughly 16 months in French oak barrels from Pauillac.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it prances out of the glass with joyful notions of black cherries, redcurrant jelly and cassis plus hints of kirsch, cedar chest, pencil lead and a waft of raspberry leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate possesses bags of poise and freshness, dishing out lots of bright red and black fruits with a soft, finely grained frame, finishing long with a skip in its step.

So much rich, sweet tobacco with currants and spices, as well as graphite. Full-bodied, tight and focused with oyster-shell and lead-pencil character on the palate. Tangy, spicy and peppery.
