Region:
Corton-Clos du Roi

Country of Origin:
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France

Type:
Red/Rouge (Still)

Grape Variety:
Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes:
Good medium red. Floral, rather delicate nose. Then sappy and expressive on the palate, with a distinctly high-toned impression to the flavors of flowers, exotic spices and minerals. The soil is like that of Corton-Charlemagne just above it, notes Claude de Nicolay, which is what gives the wine its firm acidity and limestone character. Finishes with splendid mineral density and outstanding subtle, mounting length.

AM Tasting note (Score: 93):

Note: this has the highest average vine age of these grands crus at 40+ years of age

As is usually the case this is much more obviously sauvage in character than either of its two grand cru stable mates. The reticent nose grudgingly offers up notes of spice, floral elements, smoke, tea and a mix of red and blue pinot fruit aromas. The palate impression is quite rich with plenty of dry extract that buffers what are the ripest tannins in the range, all wrapped in an intensely mineral-driven and hugely long finish. This is by far and away the best wine here.
